Wednesday Night: Allentown Fair

The air is cool, and the moon is bright. After scrambling to find a parking spot, I wander down the path to the gate, shining with vibrant lights and excited children. The rides sparkle like the stars in the night. Entering the fair, I am surrounded by the strong aroma of fresh popcorn, sizzling tacos, and every food item you could fit into a deep fryer. I feel the curiosity in my steps and the need to explore. Hearing the contagious laughter of children and adults and tasting the cotton candy as it melts on my tongue, I begin to feel the excitement and enthusiasm of this fascinating fair. Not only does the sense of sight give me the physical view of this joy, but it gives attention to the abstract concept of youth.

Youth is a tricky concept to think about, but that is what comes to mind on this night of the fair. The symphony of happiness amongst the children. Not a care in the world. It is not a secret that transitioning into an adult is not easy. Nostalgia of childhood has often brought emotions of sadness and longing. But at this fair, I feel free of the chains of responsibility. Regardless of age, I believe you can feel the same vivaciousness as a child at the Allentown Fair.

This fair environment is optimal to evoke the reminisce of youth. The sight of prizes summons your inner child-like competitiveness. That is what makes Allentown’s fair so memorable: the ability to return to the state of youth. You cannot miss the bright lights of the games luring you in to play. Or the endless stands with sweet treats tempting your self-control. It is like stepping into a time machine where times were simpler. The sky is shining with stars and rainbows beaming from the ferris wheel. Think of it like an exit from reality, a pause in life. At this fair, there is innocence, smiles on every face, and continuous cheering. There are simple pleasures at the Allentown Fair.

While exiting the fair, my heart is fulfilled, adventures completed, and my mind at rest. The kids walk out the gate, prizes in hand and mouths stained from candy. The music fades, and the lights start to dim. While leaving, I wonder if I can make time to return tomorrow or this week. All I know is that next year will be another opportunity to feel this joy with family and friends. The ache in my soul is healed, and I see the world in a new perspective. I decide to let a piece of my inner-child stick with me along the hardships of the future. My head fills with gratitude, for the Allentown Fair has taught me to be true to myself, enjoy the present, and savor memories.

Until next year, I will remember the experience and promise to return. Let the music flow in my ears. Feel the anticipation course through my body. Become a kid again, even if it is for one night.
