Reading Ourselves

Over the semester, my writing has evolved in a few ways. I have become more confident in expressing my ideas and thoughts clearly, improved my ability to organize my writing, and presented information in a logical and cohesive manner. Additionally, I’ve learned to be more mindful of grammar and punctuation.

Staying on the prompt and providing evidence to support claims is something I strive for in my responses. I want to make sure that I address the questions and provide adequate information. If I make any claims or statements, I provide evidence to back up these claims, fortifying the prompt. One aspect I would like to work on is expanding my vocabulary. By incorporating more diverse and nuanced words into my writing, I can enhance its richness and depth. I also want to continue implementing my editing skills, paying close attention to sentence structure and clarity.

To make these improvements, I plan to read more widely and expose myself to different writing styles. By doing so, I can learn new words and sentence structures that I can incorporate into my writing. I will continue to practice writing regularly, consider feedback from others, and implement their suggestions to refine my work. As for my writing process, it has become more structured and disciplined. I now set aside time for elaborating, drafting, editing, and revising. This organized approach has helped me locate my thoughts and produce clearer writing. I also make use of tools like Grammarly to ensure accuracy.

My “Longer Reflection” assignment was one of my favorite pieces I have written. I really enjoyed working on it, and it felt great to incorporate all the things we learned in this course. “The Great Allentown Fair” writing evoked a sense of nostalgia for me. It brought back memories of fun times at the fair, while also being a well-organized piece. I really enjoyed writing about it and reminiscing about my past experiences. My “An Examination of How the Stereotyping of Middle Eastern Features Leads to a Negative Sense of Self ” essay was a bit of a challenge for me. I struggled with organizing my thoughts and making sure everything flowed smoothly. Nonetheless, I kept reorganizing, and refining my essay until it felt right to me. In the end, I was satisfied with the grade I received.

My favorite assignment was definitely creative free writing. I enjoy being able to be  expressive in my writing. Since I love poetry, I chose to write a free verse poem about the Middle East. Poetry has the incredible ability to capture emotions, stories, and perspectives in such a beautiful way. It’s like painting with words and creating emotions in the reader’s mind. It allows me to explore different themes and ideas in a creative and meaningful manner.

This course has been incredibly helpful in enhancing my writing skills. It has provided me with valuable insights into various aspects of writing, such as grammar, structure, and style. Through engaging conversations and assignments, I’ve learned new techniques to improve my writing and write more effectively. The course has also emphasized the importance of self-reflection and seeking feedback, which has been vital in my growth as a writer. As well, this course has created a community where I can share my work, receive constructive criticism, and learn from others through our Berg Builds writing portfolios. Overall, FYS has been a fantastic opportunity to refine my writing abilities.
