Take on “Should we read The Nights?”

Deciding whether or not we should read a book based on its sensitive content is a tricky question to answer. As we know, there are millions of different books and pieces of literature that have content that is explicit or problematic, but I am hesitant to say that a particular book should not be read. While I understand why people would want to censor specific language or descriptions told by a story, I think that censorship inhibits education. I do not feel strongly on either side; however, I think we should know of the mistakes in history and misconceptions from translators.

There were scenes of sexual content and inclusions of racially problematic and ignorant perspectives, along with the vizier threatening to abuse his daughter. These parts of the text had to have been written either by the original author of the Nights or by any number of translators. This is a problem in our time now. This type of literature would not be accepted, and I don’t like it either. That being said, we can only learn from past mistakes. It is a shame that people have this mindset, but we can analyze literature and mend this ideology. We could use explicit literature like this as an example of what not to do instead of turning a blind eye.
