I watched the Barbie movie over the summer, and I have to say it was a great step in recognizing the concept of feminism. I attended the feminist analysis of Barbie event in Moyer Hall, and valuable insight was provided regarding the scenes in the movie.
The presenters mentioned the scene where Barbie is talking to an elderly woman in the real world, who is later revealed to be her creator. We got to rewatch the dance scene where Barbie asks all the other Barbies if they think thoughts of dying. This later introduces the conflict throughout the movie. The scene where Barbie says she is going to the gynecologist shows her new life where she has control over her future, especially her body.
However, I think there could be a few improvements made to the movie. It would’ve been nice to see more diverse body types and other ethnicities represented among the characters.
Overall, it was a step in the right direction, and I hope to see even more progress in future movies representing feminism.
