I was taken aback by the Thief of Baghdad. I thought it was an interesting movie that had many surprising and unusual elements within the film. I think it plays into how the East is portrayed as this mystical and completely different part of the world. I think that it displays the wild and uncivilized stereotype of the Middle East and how there is such a drastic division between the rich and poor/thieves. While watching the movie, it felt like a dream with “othering” elements such as:
- The floating objects
- Fancy clothing
- Odd portrayal of the Genie
- Weird 6-legged creature thing
- Unique music/ ambiance/ atmosphere/mood
- The thief turning into a dog/ the dog turning into the thief.
The movie was so dramatized it almost felt like a comedy.
